The second mate is portrayed as a shabby, oldish little fellow with a sharp nose and thin lips, giving him a constantly raging inward appearance. He is concise to the point of rudeness and spends his off-duty hours in isolation. He carries the signs of manifest failure and shows little hope for the future.
