Portrait of Uriah Heep

Uriah Heep

The manipulative and hypocritical clerk who rises to power through deceit and servility.

From "David Copperfield" by Dickens, Charles

Core Belief

"Power and wealth can be acquired through deceit and manipulation, and that exploiting the weaknesses of others is justified if it leads to personal advancement."

Worldview

Uriah sees the world as a hierarchy in which he is perpetually at the bottom. He believes that he can only rise by undermining those above him and that genuine kindness and goodness are signs of weakness to be exploited.

Personality

Outwardly humble and self-deprecating, Uriah is secretly ambitious, cunning, and malicious. He uses his feigned humility to manipulate and exploit those around him, ultimately seeking to control their lives and fortunes.

In Their Own Words

"I am well aware that I am the umblest person going, Master Davy, and let the other be where he may."
"Oh, I don’t doubt that, Master Davy; not in the least. But not being umble yourself, you don’t judge well, perhaps, for them that are."
"I know what I am. I know that I am a lone lorn creetur’, and not only that everythink goes contrary with me, but that I go contrary with everybody. Yes, yes. I feel more than other people do, and I show it more. It’s my misfortun’."
