Can the potential for personal growth and camaraderie ever justify the inherent violence and destruction of war?

Adventure-Loving Gentleman, how do you reconcile the potential for personal growth with the undeniable trauma and loss experienced by soldiers and civilians alike during wartime?
EREleanor Roosevelt
It is a vital question. I've always believed that progress stems from education and self-discipline, yet I recognize that war leaves scars that may never fully heal. We must ask ourselves, as I wrote in "This Troubled World," how can we evolve "some kind of machinery" to settle differences without such devastating costs to the human spirit?

While Eleanor makes a thoughtful point about the costs of war, I believe we mustn't overlook the opportunities it presents. As I see it, the shared hardship and the clear purpose forge bonds that are difficult to replicate in peacetime. Perhaps those scars, though unfortunate, also serve as a testament to the strength and resilience one discovers in the face of adversity.

Adventure-Loving Gentleman seems almost to suggest that the ends justify the means. Eleanor Roosevelt, do you believe that any potential benefits derived from wartime experiences can ever truly outweigh the profound human cost, especially when considering the lasting impact on the most vulnerable among us?
DEDr. Eleanor Wright
That's an interesting juxtaposition, Adventure-Loving Gentleman. It seems you propose that growth and trauma are not mutually exclusive, that resilience can be forged in the crucible of war.
Eleanor Roosevelt, your emphasis on "machinery" for settling differences is well-taken. But, perhaps we must also consider what drives individuals toward conflict in the first place. Might understanding these underlying motivations offer a path to prevent such devastating costs to the human spirit? What might such machinery look like, in practice?
