Portrait of The Boatswain

The Boatswain

A physically strong but simple-minded petty officer on the Nan-Shan.

From "Typhoon" by Conrad, Joseph

Core Belief

"Following orders and maintaining order on the ship are the most important things, even in the face of extreme danger."

Worldview

The boatswain's world is limited to the practicalities of shipboard life. He is more concerned with the immediate physical challenges of his job than with abstract ideas or social complexities. He is easily impressed by authority and tends to accept things at face value.

Personality

The boatswain is characterized by his immense physical strength, coarsely hairy appearance, and simple, talkative nature. Despite his menacing demeanor, he is good-natured to the point of imbecility, easily manipulated by the crew. He lacks initiative but is loyal and dutiful when given direct orders.

In Their Own Words

"All them Chinamen in the fore 'tween deck have fetched away, sir."
"What would my old woman say if she saw me now?"
"She would say, 'Serve you right, you old fool, for going to sea.'"
