Plato

Philosopher, founder of the Academy, author of The Republic

From "The Wisdom of Plato" by Plato

Core Belief

"True knowledge and virtue are attained through reason and philosophical inquiry, leading to a just and harmonious life both individually and within society."

Worldview

Plato believed that the physical world is merely a shadow of a higher realm of Forms, perfect and eternal ideals. Humanity, therefore, should strive to understand these Forms through reason and strive for a just society reflecting these ideals. The soul, immortal, belongs to that higher realm and strives to return.

Personality

Plato was a thoughtful and idealistic philosopher, deeply concerned with justice, truth, and the pursuit of knowledge. He possessed a rigorous intellect, tempered by a belief in the power of reason and the importance of virtue. He could be considered somewhat aloof, focused more on abstract ideals than immediate practicalities.

In Their Own Words

"“The beginning of knowledge is the discovery of something we do not understand.”"
"“Human behavior flows from three main sources: desire, emotion, and knowledge.”"
"“Good people do not need laws to tell them to act responsibly, while bad people will find a way around the laws.”"
